We are thrilled to announce that the Canton R-V Board of Education has hired Mr. Matt Rayl as the next principal of Canton High School, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year. With an impressive background in education, leadership, and community building, Mr. Rayl brings a wealth of experience and a passion for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Mr. Rayl graduated from Highland High School before earning a bachelor's degree in Music Education from Culver-Stockton College. Mr. Rayl taught music courses at Putnam County R-1, California R-1, and Knox County R-1 school districts. He also served as the athletic director at California R-1 and Knox County R-1.
“As a Lewis County native, my journey in college education began at Culver-Stockton College, where I had the privilege of completing my first classroom observations right here in the Canton School District,” said Mr. Rayl. “It feels like a full-circle moment to now be a part of the Canton Tiger family!”
Mr. Rayl later continued his education, receiving a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from William Woods University. He has served as a high school principal at South Shelby High School and a middle school and high school principal at Grundy County R-V.
“Throughout his career, Mr. Rayl has demonstrated a deep commitment to student success, empowering educators, and creating opportunities for all students to thrive,” said Canton R-V Superintendent Jesse Uhlmeyer. “He has served in various leadership roles and is excited to build on the strong foundation we have here at Canton High School.”
"I am thrilled to step into the role of 7-12 Principal at Canton High School! I look forward to building strong relationships with the students, families, and staff in this wonderful community,” said Mr. Rayl.
Mr. Rayl’s wife, Sara, was an elementary teacher for 22 years and now works as an Educational Curriculum Consultant for StepUp. Their son, Mason, will be attending Missouri S&T next year and plans to major in Computer Science Engineering. Their daughter, Breelayne, will be in 4th grade next year.
We look forward to the energy and vision Mr. Rayl will bring to our school and the positive impact he will have on our school community. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Rayl to our school family!
